New 2017 FIAT 500 at FIAT of Larchmont for Larchmont, NY

The Italian car company, FIAT, has been around the American car scene for more than a century. In fact, FIAT started producing two luxury car models in New York in 1908. Fast forward to 2011, and FIAT releases a newly designed FIAT 500 model. Six years later, the FIAT 500 still holds its ground in the subcompact class, offering European liveliness, more personality than its competitors, and excellent fuel economy. The FIAT 500 also offers a more track-worthy option, the Abarth trim, for the sportier driver. It has a turbo-boosted engine, performance suspension and brakes, and a lowered body height for more action on the road. There is also the cabrio option, or 500c. With its push-button retractable top, the 500c becomes topless in an instant. The FIAT 500 has so much to offer in a subcompact vehicle. Continue reading to learn more about this endearing car.

Under the 500's Hood

The FIAT 500 offers two engine choices depending on the trim. The first two trims, the Pop and the Lounge, come standard with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. The sport trim, the Abarth, has a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that makes 157 horsepower and 183 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come paired with a six-speed automatic transmission which pushes power to the front wheels. The Abarth does have an optional five-speed manual transmission which increases the horsepower and torque to 160 and 170 lb-ft. Per Edmund's testing, the manual transmission Abarth went from 0 to 60 in a short 7.1 seconds. Fuel economy for the 500 ranges from 29-34 mpg combined, depending on the powertrain.

Design of FIAT 500

The driver and front passenger seating area in the FIAT 500 is roomy enough for taller occupants, and standard features in the lowest trim are impressive. To start, the Pop trim includes full power accessories, a 7-inch color driver information display, keyless entry, cruise control, heated mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, a 5-inch touchscreen with Uconnect, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker audio system with USB and auxiliary inputs. Next up is the Lounge trim, which adds foglights, exterior chrome trim, leather seating, automatic climate control, satellite radio, and heated fronts seats. Finally, the Abarth trim adds performance features such as a rear spoiler, performance high-back front bucket seats, 16-inch wheels, designer interior and exterior detailing, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a sport steering wheel. If you value high-quality sound with your music, there is also an available six-speaker Beats Audio sound system with a trunk-mounted subwoofer.
